Christian Hillgruber studied law in Cologne until 1988. In 1991 he earned his doctorate at the University of Cologne, the second state examination followed in 1992. He was research assistant at the University of Cologne and research associate at the Federal Constitutional Court (BVerfG). In 1997 habilitation in Cologne. He was first acting professor, then professor for public law at the University of Heidelberg (1997/98) and professor for public law, international law and philosophy of law at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (1998 to 2002). Since 2002 he is professor of public law at the University of Bonn. Since 2016 he is furthermore director of the Institute of Ecclesiastical Law.
